Hunter 44860 Programmable Stat August 14, 2010 Ronald Ott The Stat was easy to install as it took about 30 Minutes total. The unit is straight forward to program. I especially like the fan refresh function.
Amazing thermostat!-Although maybe slightly confusing for those not technically inclined. August 7, 2010 Marilyn This thermostat is great! I bought it because my old one would have my heat/ac running almost constantly, even though it said it was at the temperature it was supposed to be at, so this is a huge improvement over that! I love how large the display is-since it is in my living room, I can generally just look across the room to see what temperature it is, presuming there is no glare. The blue and red back light, depending upon if the heat or ac is on, is really impressive-looking (although it doesn't stay lit constantly, and there appears to be no way to make it do so-although I personally would not want it to stay lit constantly as it is fairly bright), and the touch screen works great! It does practically anything you could want a thermostat to do, with the ability to program 4 different temperatures throughout different time periods in the day, for both heating and cooling. One feature that I appreciate, but was not expecting is how it keeps track of how many hours the system has been running for the day, the previous day, the current month, and the previous month-I suppose that isn't the most important of features, but it is interesting to be able to see it. The only downside to this thermostat is that there is definitely a bit of a learning curve. The instructions explain almost everything, but they somehow manage to leave out some details of the basic navigation through the system, so at first you can be left not knowing what to do whenever you accidentally press something you didn't mean to press, in fear that pressing anything else might totally mess up everything that you have set so far-but, once you play around with it for a little while it all becomes clear and it actually becomes pretty easy to use. The installation was a breeze: just remove your previous thermostat, using the provided stickers to label all the wires before you disconnect them, and then install this thermostat with the labels on the wire to guide you. It does take 3 AA batteries to work, so make sure you pick those up, because they are not included (also, I am kind of thinking the reviews saying it started going crazy after a year probably need to change their batteries-it would be pretty easy to forget they are even in there since there is no obvious battery compartment). Overall, it's a great-working thermostat that looks really good (which is important in my case since it is in a pretty prominent location in my living room) that has an almost overwhelming array of features, and I am enjoying it immensely.
Non-continuous backlight illumination hinders interface use model July 22, 2010 G. Morency (NC) From the moment I started using this thermostat, which was in the evening, I did not like it. Having the backlight only operate for a few seconds results in an odd use model for using the interface when the ambient light is low. The documentation/packaging does not indicate that the backlight will turn off after a few seconds. In fact, the documentation has a troubleshooting entry as follows: "6. Problem - The display comes on but does not stay illuminated. Solution - Replace batteries." Having tried several sets of new batteries and reading other reviews, I am concluding that my unit is not faulty and that the backlight is designed to turn off after a few seconds. So I am in a dark room and want to see the current state of the thermostat, I touch the screen, the backlight comes on and the screen goes into some settings mode which I then have to hit ENTER in order to cancel so I can finally see the overall status summary of the unit. This bad flow also renders the colored background feature virtually useless. Although the blue background registers in my mind a fraction of a second faster than my eyes can see either the cooling icon or the "COOL RUNNING" prompt, it is not really necessary. To see the blue background, I have to be close enough to touch the screen, which means I am close enough to read the screen. This capability would really be useful if the backlight STAYED ILLUMINATED because a person could easily see from across a room or down the hall that the AC is currently running. I also do not understand why such a large display cannot show both the ambient temperature and the target temperature(s) at the same time, expecially when the main purpose of the unit is to periodically vary the target temperature to conserve energy. I am returning this unit for a Honeywell that stays illuminated and shows multiple temperatures.
Good product: mediocre documentation. June 28, 2010 Grandpa (Ottawa, Canada) The product was a reasonable price: fairly easy to install: looks good and works well. That said the documentation leaves much to be desired and the user interface is not intuitive and getting used to it takes time.
So. Totally. Confusing. March 26, 2010 Monica Ricci (Atlanta GA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
OMG could they make it any *more* complicated to operate?? AND by the way, I'm not even talking about when it's in "Program" mode. I'm talking fully manual. I swear flying a plane would be easier in some ways than operating this thing. Clearly it's designed by engineers and not people who care about user simplicity and usability. ALSO, somehow it magically switched its settings recently. All of a sudden I'm freezing in my house and I realize it's blowing COLD air in the winter time. After going over the piss-poor instruction manual, and then spending a long time searching on the Internet, I finally landed here on Amazon where I found some answers. I found out from another customer review about the heat setting -- if you push the little flame icon, it will tell you whether the heat setting is turned on or off. Well hellooooo the heat setting was turned OFF. I never turned it off, so it must have done it by itself. Can someone also please tell me WHY the little flame icon would even be showing if the heat was actually turned OFF? So frustrating. ANOTHER thing I realized during The Great Settings Caper is that it was no longer set to HEAT PUMP! It was set to CONVENTIONAL and OIL/GAS instead of HEAT PUMP and ELECTRIC! I wondered why my electric bill was $220 in January, which is a month when NOBODY WAS EVEN AT THE HOUSE! I guess now that I figured out its bugs, I'll have to just randomly check the settings to be sure that it hasn't magically changed its own settings while we're away. Ugh. What a pain in the behind.
