Auto Changeover Makes This a Winner! February 10, 2010 R. Barrett (St Augustine, United States) We have two heating/cooling systems, one for each level of the home. Last month I bought a Lux 1500 based on the excellent reviews it got from Consumer Reports and Amazon reviewers. However, it had one huge failing--no auto changeover! In my research I missed this because I thought every programmable thermostat had auto-changeover. So, I set out to find a better unit, and came across the Honeywell 6400. Ordered it, installed it (15 minutes), set it up for auto-changeover, and I couldn't be happier. This thermostat is fantastic. And it tells you at a glance BOTH the actual temp and target temp for the room, something else the Lux doesn't do. The only feature I can imagine wanting that this unit doesn't have is a vacation mode... but really, that's pretty easy to achieve by just switching to a manual heat or cool mode and setting the temp manually. I have recommended this unit to several friends already, and at only $50, my experience is that it will easily pay for itself in a couple of months.
Save $ now on your heating bill February 5, 2010 Joseph A. Beck (Fishtown, USA) You can realize some significant cost savings by installing this thermostat and lowering your temperature at night and while you are at work or away from home. I saved 40% on my heating bill this month, compared to last year when I had a mercury thermostat.
Easy to program and easy to use. January 25, 2010 Paul Brown (Naperville, IL USA) I bought this to replace an other Honeywell, which was a non programable unit. So far i have to say it does exactly what it claims to do. Makes the house warm in the daytime and cold at night! (joke) It's easy to program and easy to use, the only complaint i have is the quick reference guide, that is supposed to be slipped into a pocket at the back of the device just doesn't fit well. Once i got it in there i couldn't get it out again without ripping it. No biggie, but annoying. As for savings, here's hoping. I haven't had the unit long enough yet to see if it has made a difference, but i can't see how it wouldn't. I'll update the review once i find out.
Just what I was looking for December 25, 2009 Vincent D'Amico (Boston, MA) I replaced an old mechanical thermostat with this unit. What a difference! It does a terrific job of controlling the room temperature. There are 2 programmable cycles. I have it warm up the house early in the morning. It then cools things down while we are at work. It warms it back up in time for our return in the evening. Late at night, back down to conserve energy. Weekends are separately programmable so you stay warm for longer periods of time. My only criticism is that programming the temperatures is a serial process. In other words, you cannot select any time period to reprogram, you must step through all the cycles. Not a big deal really considering that there is a manual override if you are home unexpectedly and there is a vacation override as well.
No Differential Temperature Control December 17, 2009 T. Swanson (Phoenix, Az.) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I had a Lux digital Thermostat for my heat pump and thought I would upgrade to a Honeywell RTH6400. I immediately noticed the heat pump was turning on for 8 to 12 minutes, and off for 6 to 9 minutes repeatedly. I looked at the temperature change on the digital display and it never changed, but remained constant at 72 degrees. The display changes from 72 to 71 degrees when the temp falls below 71.5 degrees and increases to 73 degrees when higher than 72.5 degrees. Since the display always says 72 degrees, it means the thermostat is turning on at 71.5 degrees and turning off at 72.5 degrees. This means the RTH6400 has a plus or minus half degree temperature differential not a plus or minus 1 degree as I have read elsewhere. Then I read the manual and could not find out how to change the temperature differential. So I called the tech support, who sounded like he was in India, and after explaining what I wanted to do 4 times he finally told me, No you can not do that." Turning the heat pump on and off like this is very inefficient, wastes electricity and money, and probably reduces the lifetime of the compressor. I just threw money away not only buying this thermostat but even more by using it for the last month. I think another Lux or maybe a Robertshaw is going to be mounted on my wall in a few days.
